Dr. April Evans, PhD. is an assistant professor and program coordinator for elementary and middle-level education programs at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. Her research focuses on the science of reading instruction and the distribution of research on social media. She regularly presents at both state and national conferences. 


She taught in public education for 11 ½ years, where she taught first grade and seventh-grade literacy. Following her classroom experience, she assumed the role of literacy instructor for the UAFS School of Education and became the literacy specialist for the program. Additionally, she took on the role as the Elementary and Middle-Level Program Coordinator, where she collaborates with the executive director and faculty to help lead the program in a positive direction to help produce “Day One Ready” teachers. 

April is certified in Pre-K-4, 4-8 Middle-Level Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts, and a K-12 Reading Specialist. She is also certified as a Reading/Literacy Coach, has her National Board Certification in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts/Early and Middle Childhood, and has completed training in the following: Units 1-6 of Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS), Orton Gillingham Institute for Multi Sensory Education-Comprehensive, and Susan Barton Dyslexia Training. She is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith and holds her Master of Education-Reading Specialist and PhD in Reading from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
