Emily Taubken serves as the Director of the Memphis Literacy Institute, a partner organization of the Memphis Teacher Residency. In this role, Emily leads, evaluates, and supports all literacy-specific initiatives. In her role as Memphis Literacy Institute Director, Emily designed and implemented a graduate-level Reading Specialist Certification program, developed the Memphis Literacy Institute School Based Model, and has led and supported a team of professors and content specialists to train and support preservice teachers, in-service teachers, and school leaders in the science of reading.

 

Prior to this role, Emily taught ESL and Elementary School literacy in high-needs schools for many years. She has served as a mentor teacher and later served as an instructional coach. In addition, Emily was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant and the Fulbright Critical Language Scholarship, with which she taught English and completed research in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Emily has a Masters in Urban Education from Union University and is currently pursuing her Ph.D in Elementary Education, with a specialization in Literacy, at the University of Mississippi. Emily has successfully completed 30 hours of Orton-Gillingham training, as well as training in Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). Emily currently serves as a National Professional Learning Facilitator for LETRS.
